Myriam Doremy Diatta, interior design, class of 2012, Roswell, GA
For me, Syracuse University meant finally pursuing what I've always wanted to do: Commercial Interior Design. My passion for design is finally satisfied in just the way I was hoping, being able to be surrounded by people of the same drive. In fact, we have become a family. Besides the design world, the Office of Multicultural Affairs has become my other family and has pushed me in the right direction.
Why did you choose SU?
Knowing that I wanted to be part of the Art and Design program, I knew that SU had the close-knit design community I wanted. Being here now at the Warehouse where all design majors have their classes and spend tons of studio hours, it has exceeded my expectations. SU has also given me diversity in interests, backgrounds, and cultures. Furthermore, the Office of Multicultural Affairs helped me greatly.Without the Wellslink Leadership Program, I know my first year would not have been as successful.
What has been your most meaningful experience so far?
My experiences with my friends are definitely amazing. They keep me balanced in crazy work days. I can't imagine SU without them. I've found super groups of friends from my south campus dorm my first year, the Warehouse, gatherings, etc. They too are diverse in their interests and backgrounds; it is so inspiring and influential.
What's the secret of your success at SU?
There's no real secret. Know what you love, know the career that will fulfill that love, and it will get you far. And for those who are not yet sure, Syracuse University's seemingly infinite resources are a tremendous help, especially the Office of Multicultural Affairs. Filling out an application for the Wellslink Program and getting in has kept me focused on my academic and leadership goals. I encourage eligible first-year students to do the same. It has even carried on to my sophomore year at Syracuse; now I'm a Wellslink peer leader.
How have you changed since you've been here?
To be honest, in high school, I was working simply to get in to college and there was definitely something missing. Now that I am here doing what I love I am totally free to explore everything I want. The difference since high school is that I have 100% more drive and a meaningful goal.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
I am so excited to graduate and decide where I want to move. Yesterday it was back home to Atlanta, and today it's Boston. Who know's where I'll want to be tomorrow. Now matter where I end up, I want to work at an amazing architecture firm.
