Ten Tons of Love is Syracuse University and SUNY ESF's semi-annual food and clothing drive. Each year a team of student and staff volunteers work to collect, move, and sort gently used clothing, housewares, non-perishable food and children's items for donation to the needy of Central New York. Ten Tons takes place in the spring and winter, and provides a sustainable, meaningful use for items that would otherwise be discarded at the end of the semester.
In the spring 2009 effort, Ten Tons collected 33 tons of food, clothing, housewares, shoes and books. 15 truckloads of furniture were collected as well. Recipients of the donated items include Transitional Living Services, Interfaith Works of CNY’s Center for New Americans, First English Food Pantry, Northside Clothes Closet, Refugee Resettlement Program, Practical Assistance Program, Bethesda Temple Pentecostal Church and Mary Nelson’s Backpack Program. The items were sorted at First English Lutheran Church before delivery to these not-for-profits, which shared donated goods with members of the Central New York community.
