University-Assisted Community Schools

On June 3, 2009, Chancellor Cantor gave an invited keynote presentation at the first National Conference on University—Assisted Community Schools, hosted by The Netter Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania. She spoke about a vision of universities as public goods, anchor institutions in their communities that galvanize expertise across campus and in the community to advance scholarship, optimize education by preparing students for the world in the world, and, at the same time, to address the pressing issues of the day. At the request of Netter Center Director Ira Harkavy, she described Syracuse University's own expansive efforts to advance such a vision—Scholarship in Action—then focused on the broad range of engagement with the Syracuse City School District through the multifaceted partnership Syracuse Say Yes to Education and Economic Development and related projects.
