Each year the Chancellor's Citation recognizes some of the outstanding contributions made by members of the faculty and staff to the mission of Syracuse University. The recipients of the Chancellor's Citation receive a special art object created by a member of the faculty in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, together with a citation statement recognizing their accomplishments. They are honored at a dinner in the spring in the company of colleagues, family, and past recipients of the award.
Early each fall, the Chancellor invites the academic community to make nominations to the selection committee who will submit its recommendations to her. The committee asks that letters of nomination list in concrete detail the nature of the individual's accomplishments, justifying recognition under one of the established categories below.
In 2006-07 the Awards were refocused to reflect the investment areas identified by the Chancellor as key to the vision of Scholarship in Action and the Creative Campus. Descriptions of each of the three awards follow.
The Award for Faculty Excellence and Scholarly Distinction is targeted toward faculty who are collaborators in work of intellectual richness which has the potential for future impact. This work should offer possibilities for synergy both within the University and outside in partnership with others.
The Award for Outstanding Contributions to Academic Access is made to members of the faculty and University staff who have worked to create and implement access initiatives for students with diverse interests and backgrounds and/or to engage diverse students in creative exchanges across disciplines or with other communities, thus enhancing engagement with various practitioners and publics.
The Award for Engaging the World is made to members of the staff whose contributions demonstrate Syracuse University's commitment to scholarship-in-action, integrating discovery, learning, and public engagement. These contributions may fall outside the academic sphere but support the University's mission at many levels. We encourage nominations for staff in service positions insofar as their contributions facilitate SU's access initiatives, collaborative work, and successful connections inside and outside of the University.
