Ben WareBen Ware
The Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School

Dr. Ben Ware is the Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School at Syracuse University. In this position he is responsible for the encouragement and development of research and other forms of scholarly activity at Syracuse University, including responsibility for grants and contracts, technology transfer, research integrity, professional development, and oversight of graduate programs. Units reporting to Dr. Ware include the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Office of Technology Transfer, the Office of Research Integrity and Protections, and the Graduate School. Included in the technology transfer responsibilities is the oversight of the New York State Center for Advanced Technology in Computer Applications and Software Engineering (CASE Center), which promotes research, technology transfer, and new business incubation in the general fields of software development and information security. Dr. Ware also oversees the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems, which is a leading center for research and technology development in the areas of indoor environmental quality and sustainable urban ecosystems.

Dr. Ware serves as the Academic Affairs officer responsible for liaison to the Senate Committee on Research, the University Committee on Intellectual Property, the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations, and the Office of Government Relations. He is the Institutional Official responsible for the protection of human and animal research subjects. He serves on the Board of Directors of the New York Indoor Environmental Quality Center, Inc. He has served on the Boards of Directors of the New York State Education and Research Network, Inc., the Museum of Science and Technology, and the Syracuse University Press. He is a member of the Advisory Committee for Performance Assessment of the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Ware is a Professor of Chemistry. He received his B. S. degree in chemistry from Oklahoma State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He began his faculty career as a faculty member in the Chemistry Department of Harvard University and came to Syracuse University to be the Chair of the Department of Chemistry in 1979.
