Eric SpinaDavid C. Smith
Vice President for Administrative Planning

David C. Smith has just begun his 35th year of service at Syracuse University having recently assumed the position of Vice President for Administrative Planning in Academic Affairs. In his current role, Smith will chair the Newhouse School dean's search; will be a consultant to the Vice President for Enrollment Management on enrollment matters; will serve as special advisor to Provost on international issues, with a special focus on SU Abroad; and will work with the Chancellor, Provost and Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement on special fundraising initiatives. He is a member of the Chancellor's Cabinet.

Previously, Smith had been responsible for the direction and oversight of a wide range of University offices including Undergraduate Admissions, Financial Aid and Scholarship Programs, Enrollment Management Research, Registrar, the Graduate Enrollment Management Center, and Syracuse University Abroad. He was also responsible for coordinating Syracuse University's relationship with Army and Air Force ROTC.

Smith was named by Chancellor Nancy Cantor to serve as her Emissary to the Haudenosaunee Nations and to assist in facilitating the University's expanding collaborations in matters related to Native people.

During his time of service at Syracuse University, Smith has served in various capacities in admissions and financial aid including Assistant Dean, Associate Dean and Dean of Admissions and Financial and also as Director of Financial Aid. Before arriving at Syracuse, he had been on the admission staffs at Clarkson University and Utica College.

Smith received the Chancellor's Citation for Outstanding Service in 1998. He served as a selection committee member for the National Merit Scholarship from 2000 to 2004 and is a member of the College Board and the National Association of College Admissions Counselors and various other professional organizations. He has authored numerous papers and articles on a range of subjects related to enrollment management and college planning. He has frequently commented in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and other national and regional publications. He has appeared occasionally on national and regional television in offering points of view on matters concerning college admissions and student financial aid. Smith has also consulted for many other institutions advising on admission and financial aid programs.

Smith holds an A.B. degree in English from Utica College. He and his wife, Deborah, live in Manlius, New York.
