On Friday, October 1, the Syracuse University campus came together to honor University Trustee Howard “Howie” G. Phanstiel ’70, G’71 and his wife, Louise, for their commitment of $20 million to create the Louise and Howard Phanstiel Scholars program. The gift is one of the largest in SU history and will benefit students for generations to come. The afternoon celebrations included fanfare from the SU Marching Band, a barbecue on the Quad, and plenty of SU spirit!
The Phanstiel Scholars
The Phanstiel Scholars program will provide financial resources to attend SU to qualified middle-class students—those who are U.S. citizens and who have demonstrated the potential for academic success and community leadership. As part of their education at SU, Phanstiel Scholars will become engaged in philanthropy, financial literacy training, and mentoring experiences to fully nurture their spirit of giving and leadership that will make the world a better place.
