Sherri Dalphonse '85

Sherri Dalphonse's successful career really did begin with SU.

"When I first got to Syracuse, I wasn't sure what part of communications I wanted to study," said Dalphonse '85, senior editor of The Washingtonian magazine. "I originally wanted to be a radio journalist. But I realized that one of my principal loves was writing, so radio didn't seem to make sense."

"At the time, Newhouse was one of only about eight schools to offer a magazine major," she said. "People may argue that you don't need a major to write for magazines, but my professors taught skills that I use today-how to write articles for magazines, which are structured differently than those for newspapers.

"Washington is a good place to make a living as a journalist," Dalphonse said. "We have major newspapers, magazines, and trade journals, where people can get experience. It's a good idea to intern-we often look at our previous interns when we have an opening."

Last spring, Dalphonse joined other successful SU alumni to discuss their career paths as part of the SUccess Begins with SU programming at Greenberg House. "When I was just starting out, I soaked up what people said about their experiences," she said. "And I got a lot of good advice on how to begin a career.
