Discovery First-Semester Study Abroad Programs

Set the tone for your college career with an inaugural semester in Florence, Italy, or Strasbourg, France.  The Discovery programs provide the option to begin your Syracuse University career overseas.  Open to first-year/freshmen applicants to SU’s College of Arts & Sciences, Discovery Florence and Discovery Strasbourg students experience their first-semester at SU’s Centers in Florence or Strasbourg.  Live with a host family, learn from experienced faculty, and prepare to join your classmates on SU’s main campus in Syracuse at the start of second semester in January. 

SU's Discovery programs provide an international foundation that will expand your academic and professional options; foreign language proficiency; and comprehension of global politics and issues. Please note that students must meet international VISA age requirements in addition to all admissions requirements.

You may be a good candidate for a Discovery program if you...

• Wish to study abroad immediately rather than waiting
• Are interested in the liberal arts
• Are a leader in your school or community
• Possess intellectual curiosity and are ready for a transformative experience
• Love to learn through doing and seeing
• May have some kind of international travel experience or a keen interest in it
• Will feel comfortable immersing yourself in a different culture
• Have the maturity to balance academics, travel, and living abroad

Admitted Discovery Students

If you've recently been admitted to a Discovery program, congratulations! We will be providing you with a variety of helpful information over the coming weeks, including:

• A Discovery FAQ document sent to you by email (including information on costs, curriculum, and what to do next)
• A Discovery packet from SU Abroad with important VISA information and other details to help you plan.

Webinars

We'll be hosting three webinars specifically for students who have been admitted to the Discovery program. These web chats will include Admissions and SU Staff, as well as Discovery ambassadors who have participated in the program in past years. Family members are welcome to chat with us as well! Log-in information will be emailed directly to students, but these events will be hosted on:

• Tuesday, April 23 from 5 - 7 pm

We offer campus tours and information sessions on weekdays and many Saturdays. We'd be glad to connect you with staff from the College of Arts and Sciences and well as SU Abroad during your visit. Just ask for these options when you call 315-443-3611 to schedule your visit!
