The Office of Academic Affairs is responsible for defining and upholding the academic standards of Syracuse University, a task that is possible only with the active involvement of all faculty members. In order to achieve the high standards of academic excellence to which the University aspires, Academic Affairs recognizes the need for an ongoing partnership with all faculty members to ensure that the University provides outstanding educational opportunities for the entire University community.
Recognizing that the faculty is the intellectual and creative force that drives the University, the Office of Academic Affairs is committed to creating a supportive and enabling environment for all faculty members by providing a broad range of programs and services in support of faculty teaching, research and professional development.
Academic Affairs encourages all faculty members to think of this office as a home away from their home schools and colleges and to take advantage of the many services available here.
The following pages have been designed with faculty members in mind to be a convenient repository of academic and administrative information for Syracuse University faculty and staff members.
A number of services are available assist you in your professional role at SU, including:
Associate Provosts: Kal Alston (kalston@syr.edu) is the Senior Associate Provost for Academic Administration and is responsible for faculty development services. Sandra Hurd (snhurd@syr.edu) is the Associate Provost responsible for academic programs and learning communities.
Faculty Manual: The Faculty Manual brings together information about Syracuse University, the policies and rules governing the faculty, and the duties and privilege the faculty.
Office of Faculty Development: This office sponsors events, provides resources, and offers consultation services in support of faculty professional development. The office oversees a two-year program of events and activities for new faculty beginning with New Faculty Welcome each August. For more information, contact Bron Adam at beadam@syr.edu.
Office of Academic Human Resources: This office facilitates faculty search and hiring processes and responds to faculty leave of absence requests (administrative, research, parental) and phased retirements. The Directorof Academic Human Resources conducts informal investigations and mediation sessions in response to faculty grievances or concerns. Information Technology and Services (ITS): ITS provides a number of computing and information services for faculty, including instructional technology training, support, and services (Blackboard, e-Portfolio, digital image database); classroom technology systems; public computer labs; instructional technology consultation services; NetID, e-mail and calendaring services; and provides staffing for the ITS help desk (443-2677, consult@syr.edu ).
Office of Research: The Graduate School administers graduate programs, scholarships, fellowships, and teaching assistantships in all areas except Law.
Office of Sponsored Programs: This office assists University faculty with submission of proposals for external support of research, scholarship, education and training, and service/outreach activities.
SU Libraries: The Libraries provide research and educational resources to the University community. E.S. Bird Library is the main library; other libraries include the Science and Technology Library and its three branches, Geology, Physics, and Math. In addition, there is the Architecture Reading Room and the Belfer Audio Library and Archive.
Syracuse University Bookstore (SUB): The SUB provides textbooks, general books, computers and software, and general merchandise to the University community. Faculty and staff receive a 10% discount on most purchases.
