Department Chairs play a critical role in identifying faculty deserving recognition. Submitting news stories about faculty accomplishments, nominating faculty for awards and encouraging faculty to seek out recognition through disciplinary or professional associations sends a strong message that you value their work and want to see them recognized.
University awards are made each year and nominating faculty from your area for awards is a great way to communicate your support for their work. Academic deans depend upon departmental leaders to keep them informed of faculty whose work is especially meritorious.
The following are University-wide honors, approved by the Vice Chancellor and Provost and the Chancellor. Syracuse University faculty are recognized with many honors and awards within their departments and schools and colleges. For example, named and endowed professorships are made possible by the generous support of donors who seek to recognize faculty excellence in teaching and research. Such honors, as well as other school and college awards, are recognized on department and school/college websites.
A substantial bequest from the estate of Dr. L. Douglas Meredith, a 1926 graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences, allowed Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw tocreate the Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professorships in 1995, to recognize and reward outstanding teaching at Syracuse University.
The Teaching Recognition Award Sponsored by the Meredith Professors is an award program sponsored by the Meredith Professors to benefit non-tenuredfaculty members. Its specific goals are to recognize excellence in teaching and to encourage a culture of collegial mentoring among faculty members.
Recipients of the Chancellor’s Citation for Excellence are chosen from nominations made by faculty, staff, and students of the University community. Aselection committee of faculty and staff from across campus reviews nominations and makes recommendations to the Chancellor.
The Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church has sponsored this award at Syracuse each year since 1982 to recognizethe teaching and scholarship of an outstanding professor. This award emphasizes the dual nature of the faculty commitment to teaching and scholarly/creative work.
Each year the University names Judith Seinfeld Distinguished Fellows to recognize recipients’ passion for excellence and exceptional creativity and originalityin academic or artistic endeavor, and to encourage their continued outstanding performance. In two of every three years, this award is made to a faculty member.In the third year, the award is made to two students.
The title “Emeritus” or “Emerita” is an honor that may be conferred upon retirement. The designation may accompany any faculty rank and identifies thedesignee as a continuing member of the University community.In special cases, the title Emeritus(a) may be conferred on a person retiring from an administrative position at Syracuse. Such designees have a distinguishedrecord of outstanding contributions over a substantial number of years. The designation may be added to the titles of University officers, academic leaders,deans, and comparable positions at the time of retirement from the administrative post or at the time of retirement from the University. Persons designatedEmeritus/a are continuing members of the University community.
Emeritus/a privileges include:
· Continued listing in University publications
· Full use of Library resources and services
· SU Id card privileges including discounts and use of campus facilities
· Notice of all University events
· Participation in academic processions
· Participation in faculty/staff academic, professional, an social activities
Process for nominating Faculty for Emeritus status
Recommendations for the Emeritus/a designation proceed to the Board of Trustees for approval through the following channels and process:
Recommendation can be made by anyone to the nominee’s department chair/program director. The nomination is then considered by:
· The nominee’s faculty colleagues
· The chair/director· The nominee’s school/college colleagues
· The nominee’s dean
· The Vice Chancellor and Provost
· Senate Appointment and Promotions Committee
Once endorsed via this process, the recommendation is presented to the University Senate for approval at the March or April meeting and forwarded to the Board of Trustees for final approval prior to the annual Commencement activities. Recommendations for Emeritus status are due to the Vice Chancellor and Provost no later than the last Tuesday of February each year. They can be submittedto the Senior Associate Provost, 203 Crouse Hinds Hall.
Process for nominating Academic Administrators for Emeritus status
Nominations for academic administrators are submitted to the Senate Committee on Appointment and Promotions by the nominee’s administrative unit, along with supporting documentation of the nominee’s distinguished record over time. The designation includes an expectation of continued service to the University. The Committee on Appointment and Promotions recommends nominees to the Senate. Nominations approved by the Senate are forwarded to the Chancellor for concurrence and then to the Board of Trustees for final approval.
